Goku As A Character: Everything You Need To Know About The Earth's Most Powerful Defender

There are two possible reasons why you're here. Maybe you are an old Dragon Ball fan, and you already know everything that we will discuss in this article. Maybe, you want to remember some of the best things about Goku, and it is totally valid. On the other hand, you might be a younger anime fan, too young to have seen Dragon Ball when it was airing. Still, you recognize a good anime when you see it, and Dragon Ball could be considered part of a list like that.

If being popular is indicative that an anime is good, then Dragon Ball would have broken the scale long ago. Of course, now there are other anime that, if you're younger, you might be more familiar with, but believe it or not, Dragon Ball is part of the ones that started everything. The first English dubs began with Dragon Ball, and this anime also popularized them. Besides making the Western public more receptive to anime, Dragon Ball was a huge hit inside its country of origin. It inspired other famous anime like Bleach, Naruto, and Fairy Tail. The fighting anime genre had an enormous change because of Dragon Ball and everything that came with it: the fights in the air, the attacks made of balls of energy, and those eccentric hairstyles that changed every time a character achieved a transformation. You might think some of those things sound cliché or even repetitive, but, in Toriyama's defense, when he put those elements in his work. It was innovative. That is why so many people have liked Dragon Ball since the beginning! It's about the fights, the transformations, and the villains.

As long as it is, some fans (and haters) of Dragon Ball have criticized how even if there are new villains every now and then, the plot repeats itself. Goku is the best, and his friends try to battle against whatever villain wants to destroy Goku, the Earth, or the Dragon Balls. When his friends can't fight anymore, that's the moment where Goku starts his thing. Sure, the fights are amazing, but some fans don't believe this is enough.

At the same time, one of the things that made Dragon Ball so remarkable is its characters. You can't get bored with any of them! We have Goku, who is naive and likes to train, and on the other side, we have Vegeta, arrogant and ambitious. They could be compared to the anime version of Messi and Cristiano. The plot gets even more intriguing in Dragon Ball Z, where we learn Goku is a Saiyan, and some people want to kill him for that same reason, starting with his brother, Raditz.

We have comic relief, like Yamcha and Krillin. We also have girl power, starting with Bulma and ChiChi. And let's not talk in detail about the villains, because we would probably make this article about them instead. Almost every villain in Dragon Ball has their own reasons and ways to do their thing and achieve whatever they want. It is impressive!

Still, today we will talk about the main character, Son Goku. He has achieved a lot since he was a kid. We saw him grow and start a family, and we couldn't be even happier for that. Let's talk a bit about him, should we?

Who Is Goku?

He is the protagonist in Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball divides itself into Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball GT. Over time, we see Goku train, fight, and achieve new transformations. At first, Goku is introduced as a human, even if he has the characteristic monkey tail of the Saiyans. In Dragon Ball Z, we learn that he is a Saiyan. He was supposed to eliminate Earth and its population, but, as a child, he lost his memory. As a consequence of it, the Saiyan traits that made him aggressive and rude completely disappeared. As a child, we see Goku being adorable, nothing like his Saiyan ancestors.

Why Is Goku So Different From The Other Saiyans?

Initially, he was sent to conquer Earth. It was only natural since Saiyajins are a race full of fighters ready to battle and destroy. However, he gets amnesia after injuring his head, and because of that same reason, he loses every memory of wanting to destroy Earth. That is the main reason he is like he is! Kind and contrary to what he was taught to do.

Still, losing his memory didn't take away his Saiyan abilities. He can fly, fight, and achieve different Saiyajin transformations. The thing that changed the most about him is that instead of wanting to destroy Earth, now he wanted to save it. Goku is strong-willed, and he will train and fight to become the best warrior in the world. He already has an advantage with his Saiyan heritage, but how powerful he is was achieved because of how determined he has been to be the best. All of that allows him to save Earth from any enemy who would want to destroy it.

Who Gave Goku His Name?

When he arrives on Earth, the one who adopts him is a man that the series calls Grandpa Gohan. That man is the one who gives him the name we later know him for: Son Goku. However, as the series progresses, we learn that his real name is Kakarot. I know a few people who laughed a lot by this original name. Still, almost no one calls him that way. The only one who insists on calling him that is Vegeta, mainly because he was raised like a Prince. The reason behind this is that he says it's his real name and it's "proper". His friends call him Goku, though.

What Inspired Toriyama To Create Goku?

Since Goku is an expert in martial arts, Toriyama grabbed inspiration from different martial arts films, primarily ones that included Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan. Besides, Dragon Ball was supposed to be based on a Chinese book called Journey to the West. As we already know, Dragon Ball expanded its universe a lot, and there are several differences between that one novel and Dragon Ball.

In the book, the main character is Sun Wukong. When you pronounce it, you'll realize that it sounds like Son Goku! Some similarities between that character and Goku are some possessions like the Flying Nimbus, for example.

It might sound crazy to think about it now, but Goku was supposed to be a full monkey since Sun Wukong is also one. Thank God, that was the first draft, and by the second one, the early conception of Goku was already a human.

For his original name, Kakarot, it's something that assimilates to the word "carrot" in English. Toriyama likes to play a lot with family names, so it's also natural that he gave the Saiyans a specific theme to follow: vegetables.

Something that changed in Goku's personality regarding the anime is that Toriyama created him intending to make him someone who fights just because he wants to and thinks it's fun to do so. For that same reason, the mangaka thinks some fights in the anime were changed to make Goku look mainly heroic when this wasn't Akira's purpose. The mangaka believes Goku could be what today you would call "toxic" from time to time.

Is There Anything Else I Should Know About Goku?

Yes! Some trivia facts include:

  • Despite the meaning of his birth name, he hates carrots.
  • He is willing to eat anything in the world.
  • He loves to fight powerful enough opponents.
  • Even if it wasn't Akira's intention, fans seem to find him similar to Superman.

That is everything! Goku is a character that some people have loved, but he also has haters. His character is funny and immature, and a common argument is that he shouldn't be the best one. (And that Vegeta should be the best, of course). It's common for fans to call him a bad father, husband, and even comrade. However, being the main character in a fighting anime, he has done what people love the most about him: to fight. And what's better, he defeats powerful enemies time after time. He captivated an entire audience and has been doing so since the 80s. So, not everything is wrong for the Goku fans!

If you're still here we invite you to look at our DBZ Store! Dragon Ball Z is the second installment of Dragon Ball, where we finally learn Goku's origins as we see him forming a family with his wife ChiChi and his first son, Gohan.

Being one of the most famous installments, we have lots of different things that appear on it! Some notable examples are the time rings, the Vegeta badman shirt, and the potara earrings. What are you waiting for? Don't let anybody tell you about it, and see it yourself.
